NI NO KUNI™ & NI NO KUNI™ II
JP > EN Localisation
Ni No Kuni™: Wrath of the White Witch was a dream project from start to finish—a real labour of localisation love. From the outset, Level-5 encouraged us to indulge our deepest creative urges in order to bring their fantastic fairytale world to life for a western audience, and we were only too happy to oblige.
So it was that the game's totemic lantern-nosed Osakan fairy, Shizuku, became Mr Drippy, a fairy with an accent and attitude straight from the valleys of South Wales, and the rest, as they say, is history. From the voice script to the game text to the accompanying Wizard's Companion—a printed book filled with stories, poems and spells from the world of Ni No Kuni™—we were involved with every aspect of the localisation of this Level-5/Studio Ghibli co-production right through to QA, and enjoyed every minute of it.It should therefore come as no surprise that we were only too thrilled to reprise our role as JP>EN localisers for the series with Ni no Kuni™ II: Revenant Kingdom. This ambitious sequel introduced all sorts of new gameplay and localisation challenges, and we thoroughly enjoyed working with Level-5 and the voice team at SIDE to once again capture the whimsy and magic of the series in English.
Thankfully, our work has seemed to go down well, and the games—along with their beloved characters—have found fans all around the world. Tidy!

"One important thing to note is the localisation which is absolutely magical. An already happy tale is made laugh out loud funny at many moments along the way. Dialogue is consistently engaging and a lot of the characters lean a long way into the weird and wonderful world around them. The wide variety of accents and speech patterns is likely to delight those who enjoy some spice along with the olde English style showcased by Evan. For a lengthy RPG focused a lot on story it made the experience very engaging..." – Press Start Australia, Ni no Kuni II
"...the actual writing is often glorious, with all the first game's demented fondness for puns, British dialects and cheeky fourth-wall breaking..." – Eurogamer, Ni no Kuni II
“What a delight Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is! It's charming but never cloying, complementing its vibrant cel-shaded art and good-natured child star with plentiful doses of wit and joy. The clever dialogue dips into a bottomless well of puns, keeping you grinning wide, if not laughing out loud at the constant goofiness. More importantly, this Japanese role-playing game possesses great soul…” – GameSpot, Ni no Kuni
“During moments that might feel hackneyed in a lesser game, Ni no Kuni always delivers—mostly thanks to the script, which has been crafted and translated with masterful precision.” – Kotaku, Ni no Kuni
“…you get to take advantage of Ni No Kuni’s extraordinary Western localization, expertly translated and delivered, and no doubt the reason the game took so long to leave Japan. Then again, everything taken into consideration, it was well worth the wait.” – IGN, Ni no Kuni
